Should main characters die?

Sometimes I struggle with the happy endings for all type of stories… surviving a quest or surviving a rebellion might be fate, but should a main character be allowed to pass away?

It’s an interesting concept, story lines touched by the darkness. Secondary characters are always there as collateral damage. It helps build the resolve of the main characters to finish their goals or to find strength to go on.

But should a main character be allowed to die? You tell me. What is your opinion?
